If you are in the process of designing or building a new home, you may want to consider including arched windows in your home. Plain square windows are wonderful for viewing the outdoors and allowing sunlight to come in, but arched windows are much more pleasing to the eye.
When trying to decide what you want your arched windows to look like, there are a few things that must be taken into consideration. You should select the wall that you wish to include your windows and take into account the size of the wall. Do you want your windows to be large covering a large portion of the wall, or do you want to design two small sets for each end of the wall?
If you need ideas for your design, you could browse through home magazines and books about homes to see what types of arched windows others have in their homes. Although you would not want to copy another person’s design, you can still get a general idea of what you want for your own home.
If you want arched windows in your attic, you can fit the curve of the window so that it flows with the triangular shape of the attic wall. A design with a large curve and short sides will create a pleasing design that will curve well with the point of the attic roof.
If you have a fireplace, you could place regular windows on each side of the fireplace and add a half circle at the top for a simple arched windows design. Three narrow windows that are side by side yet each one placed at a different level would be a pleasing stepped design.
If you wish to have the convenience of sliding glass doors, a great design idea would be to encircle the sliding doors with a half circle frame so that the doors become part of your window.
Determining The Size Of Your Arched Windows
To help you determine how large or how small you will want your windows to be, you should first measure your wall and also take into account the location of the wall. If it is in your dining room, will you want the window to be beside your table? If so, you will want the bottom part of the windowsill to be level with your dining table so that passer-bys cannot look in ands see you, your guests and your family members feet.
If you wish to have a pair of arched windows in your living room, would you want them to be placed on each side of your sofa, TV or favorite chair? If they are to reach from floor to ceiling, then you will want to ensure that the width of each window can be adequately used in your living area where your furniture will not cover any part of them.
Sketches and Drawings
Once you have decided on the placement of your arched windows, an easy way to design the basic outline of them would be to use a piece of graph paper and a pencil. Draw the basic outline that you wish to use for your windows, and then draw any designs that you wish to be framed in glass at the top of your windows.
Once you have a rough sketch of your desired design, give the design to the company in charge of constructing your home along with instructions on where you want the windows to be placed. When your new home is completed, you can proudly tell guests and family members that you are the designer of those fabulous arched windows.
