Elaborate basement remodeling can mean the difference between a dank, dark, cavern beneath your home that you only venture into when forced or having a warm, cheerful, comfortable haven.
You can transform a former storage-area basement into a number of things: a recreation room, another bedroom, a home office, or you can add a wet bar, pool table, badminton table, foosball table, or any number of play-area accoutrements.
An adjoining bathroom remodeling project usually goes right along with extensive basement makeovers, so keep that in mind as well when you begin drawing up plans. Adequate plumbing must be added to the costs involved, in addition to the style and design.
Defining Your Budget
Depending on just how elaborate you want to get with your basement remodeling, be prepared to spend anywhere from several thousand dollars on up to the skys the limit. A good figure to begin with involves what it will cost to make the basement dry, add the aforementioned additional plumbing, electrical work for new ceiling and wall outlets, your wall-and floor-covering selections, furniture and lighting. Whatever else you decide upon, including ceiling fans, a/c units, etc. an be considered extras; these are just the starting points.
Investment or Indulgence?
Remodeling a basement runs about half the price of redoing an upper-level room, but keep in mind that you will only receive a little more than three-quarters of every dollar you spend at resale time. Despite the popularity of basement remodeling, do not do it as an investment.
Do it for your own personal reasons and realize that an investment like this is smarter for those who plan to stay in their homes for a long time. And even for those intending long-term living in a home, make sure you do not remodel to the extent that when and if you DO want to sell, you do not feel compelled to price your home over what other homes in your area are getting.
With that said, remodeling a basement can be the answer to many issues: where to put inlaws for extended visits, where to put teenagers for a noise-reduced good time, or where to bring friends over for a night of entertainment. The possibilities are many; it is really up to you.
