There are a few different types of asphalt shingles. Comparison of these shingles is separated between the two major types; the organic and the non-organic (fiberglass).
Gutters mounted on your fascia board at the edge of your roof serve a great purpose. They keep the water from falling where you do not want it, such as on your walkway to the front door. But they are misused more often then not, usually prompted by gutter salesmen.
Roof boards are used for sheathing under materials that require solid and continuous support, such as asphalt shingles, composition roofing and metal-sheet roofing, must be laid closed. Closed roof sheathing may also be used for wood shingles. Closed roof boards should preferably be of dressed and matched or shiplap material, 8 inches in width and 1 inch in thickness.
Roof sheathing is the coverage over the rafters or roof joists and usually consists of nominal 1 incg boards for both pitched and flat roofs. WHere flat roofs are to be used for a deck or balcony, thicker boards or double sheathing may be required, especially where joists are spaced more than 16 inches center on center, or where diagonal sheathing is employed.
If you live in an area with an extreme climate, high temperatures in summer and cold temperatures with a good helping of snow in winter, the you will probably know what damage those elements can do to your home. Snow especially can cause a problem as far as drainage is concerned because a heavy build up of snow that melts when the atmosphere heats up can put serious strain on your roof. There are ways around this though, and one of the main ways to bypass the problem is to install a roof snow melting system.
