Replacing a tub drain gasket involves quite a lot of work, especially when you do not have the right materials and tools. If you try to remove the drain basket with a pair of screwdrivers, you will fail, simply because being soft metal or rubber, they will bend under the hardness of the material.
When replacing tub drain gasket, you should use the basket wrench, a specially designed tool for removal of kitchen sink baskets. If you do not have this tool, you can use a reciprocating saw with a short metal-cutting blade.
Tub Drain Gasket Replacement Method
Here is how replacing tub drain gasket works. First, make a cut through one side and take out the drain fitting by using a twist of a pry bar. You can replace the existing tub drain gasket either with a PVC kit or with a brass drain kit, but the latter costs twice as much as the PVC kit.
The connecting link for the drain stopper is the long rod. You have to remember that the adjustment of the length of the linkage is very important because if the rod is too small the stopper will not hold the water. If, on the other hand, the rod is too long, the water will not drain fast enough which will cause the clogging of the drain.
After you remove the old drain and the old faucet, clean up the porcelain with a substance that should remove hard water deposits. Assemble the drain pipes, but do not tighten completely the slip-joint nuts, because you have to install the components from the inside of the tub.
After you have done this, apply a generous amount of clear silicone caulk around the metal underside of the drain basket and to the black rubber gasket beneath the tub. But there is a risk that this method implies.
The next thing that you are to do is to squeeze the gaskets out of place. This can be done really easily because the silicone that you have applied will act as a lubricant. But you have to pay much attention not to tighten too much the basket when you put it in the drain fitting. Use a pair of pliers that will help you to tighten it just how it should be.
The next step consists in the connection of the stopper and of the linkage to the overflow cover plate. Then install the screws in order to secure the cover plate to the overflow tube.
There is, however, a small problem that appears while replacing tub drain gasket . The black rubber gasket might be squeezing out on the left side due to the silicone that causes slippage. The best option in this case is to tighten a little bit more the screws which prevent the leaking around the gasket.
Tools Required for Replacing a Tub Drain Gasket
The process of replacing tub drain gasket involves the using of several tools such as the basic hand tools, a small saw, a caulk gun, and a reciprocating saw. The materials that you are supposed to use are the PVC tub draining kit and the clear silicone.
There might appear some problems in the case in which the distance between the back of the tub and the overflow pipe makes it difficult to insert the new gasket. In this case, the best solution is to look at tub drains and overflows in a store to see how they go together. Then ask for the advice of professional.
